MEET THE PROFESSOR
Meet Professor Eddie Avelar
4th-degree Machado black belt. 22 years on the mat. Leading the academy in Spring, Texas.
Why This School Exists.
Most people who walk into a martial arts school for the first time get sold before they ever step on the mat. Contracts across a table. Belts promised by month six. A pitch about the lifestyle before a conversation about the art. That is the industry most kids and adults in Spring have seen.
Ground Dwellers exists so anyone in this part of Texas who wants to learn real martial arts from a real black belt can do it, month to month, without feeling like they are walking into a timeshare seminar.

THE ROAD TO THE BLACK BELT
Twenty-Two Years on the Mat.
Professor Eddie Avelar started training Brazilian jiu-jitsu in his early thirties. What began as a way to stay in shape became a lifelong pursuit. Over the next two decades he earned his way up through every belt, learning from Master Carlos Machado and training under one of the most respected families in the art.
He earned his black belt. He earned his second, third, and fourth degrees on that belt. Today Professor Avelar is a Carlos Machado Jiu-Jitsu Association ambassador, a recognition given only to instructors Master Machado trusts to carry the lineage forward.
At 54 he still rolls with his students. He leads the academy himself, sets the standards, and is on the mat regularly doing the work. That is not a marketing line. That is what you will see the first time you walk in.
Direct Affiliation. Not a Franchise.
Ground Dwellers is a direct affiliate of Carlos Machado Jiu-Jitsu. The Machado brothers (Carlos, Roger, Rigan, Jean Jacques, and John) are among the most respected names in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Their lineage traces directly back to Helio Gracie.
Most martial arts schools claim a lineage. Very few carry direct affiliation. The difference is who your instructor answers to, who signs off on his belts, and whose standards the academy is held to. For Ground Dwellers, that answer is Master Carlos Machado.
THE ACADEMY
What the Room Feels Like.
The academy sits on Louetta Road in Spring. Full mat space. Heavy bags. Pro Guard, Broken Butterfly, and Butter Half systems printed in Professor Avelar's handwriting on the walls.
Students range from kids learning their first choke to adults preparing for black belt tests. The energy is focused, the music is low, and the Professor is usually on the mat in his gi, talking a student through a specific grip they have been working on for weeks.
